WisGate Connect: A modular, industrial IoT platform

WisGate Connect is a modular IoT platform designed for multi-radio access networks and IIoT protocols. It's powered by a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4, so you can tailor it to your specific needs, from development to field deployment.

Integrated Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4

The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 is a miniature Raspberry Pi, without peripherals such as Ethernet or USB ports, but with the same power and features ideal for industrial solutions: a wide operating temperature range and integrated eMMC storage on some models, avoiding the use of slow, failure-prone SD cards.

WisGate Connect is compatible with all existing CM4 variants, with or without WiFi and Bluetooth, from 2 to 8 GB RAM and from 8 to 32 GB eMMC on-board storage for the operating system. Of course, it's also compatible with "Lite" modules without on-board eMMC. In this case, you can flash the operating system directly onto an SD card as you would with a Raspberry Pi, but the use of a module with eMMC memory is strongly recommended.

Additional features

In addition to the CM4, WisGate Connect includes a real-time clock, a 16-bit analog-to-digital converter (available on WisBlock slots), a temperature sensor, a fan driver and two GPIO expanders offering 32 new I/Os on MiniPCIe and WisBlock slots, as well as user-controlled LEDs on the board. And a buzzer too!

Modular equipment

There's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all IoT solution. That's why WisGate Connect has been designed to support different options in a modular way.

The WisGate Connect is designed to support multiple connectivity options, both wireless and wired. It features 3 MiniPCIe slots and an M.2 B-key slot for wireless radios such as LoRaWAN subGHz, LoRaWAN 2.4GHz, 4G, 5G, WiFi6, WiFi HaLow, Zigbee, Thread...

If you're interested in industrial protocols, WisGate Connect features 2 WisBlock IO slots compatible with dozens of existing modules to cover protocols such as ModBUS, CanBUS, LinBUS, 4-20mA, 0-5V...

It also features a 1 Gb Ethernet port (with PoE support) and another 2.5 Gb Ethernet port, two USB3 ports and a USB2 port for external peripherals, as well as serial console access via a full-size HDMI port. And, of course, it's compatible with all existing Raspberry Pi "hats".

What's more, access to Compute Module 4's PCIe lane from one of the MiniPCIe slots and the M.2 slot supports a wide range of uses, from 5G to NVMe disks, SATA disks, Ethernet, USB, adapters... On a Raspberry Pi, this interface is used exclusively for USB3 and is not available to the user.

Industrial power supply

The device supports 10-28VDC power supply via 2.1x5.5mm cylindrical connector or Phoenix connector, as well as active PoE (IEEE 802.3at or IEEE 802.3bt) up to 60W (with optional PoE module).

It also supports the "dying gasp" function, so it can send a notification in the event of a power cut, or survive brief power outages.

RAKPiOS: a Linux distribution for WisGate Connect

A custom distribution called RAKPiOS has been developed for the WisGate Connect. RAKPiOS is a fork of Raspberry Pi OS with all the drivers needed to use the device, some security modifications, helper scripts and Docker included by default.

You can easily deploy multiple IoT services from an organized list of available Docker containers on the device.

Different configurations

You can choose the memory and storage of the compute module, the number of radios and protocols you want to support, or the wired protocols you want to use with WisGate Connect.

WisGate Connect is compatible with three different boxes, depending on your needs:

  • Aluminum/plastic outer casing: Compatible with the aluminum/plastic outer casing used on popular WisGate Edge Pro gateways, ideal for outdoor environments.
  • Metal inner case: A new metal inner case designed for desktop or wall-mounted use. It offers access to all rear connectors (USB, HDMI, Ethernet...) and up to six SMA antennas. It also features a small OLED display for basic device information (IP address, processor load, free memory, etc.).
  • Aluminum housing: An attractive aluminum housing that can be deployed in hard-to-reach locations such as factories (minimum order quantity required).

The best of both worlds

WisGate Connect is positioned between the WisGate Developer and WisGate Edge ranges. It offers the benefits of Raspberry Pi's rich, flexible ecosystem with the reliability of an industrial-grade product.

Whether you're an IoT developer, a solution provider or a company looking for a new platform, we hope you'll soon have a WisGate Connect on your desk and start exploring the possibilities of this brand new product.
